Marty Mood began his infatuation with fishing at a very early age. He honed his skills on the many creeks, rivers and small ponds and lakes of Southern Pennsylvania chasing anything that swam, flew, crawled or slithered. After a four year Navy enlistment, he attended Frostburg State University where he earned a B.S. in Wildlife/Fisheries Biology. Afterwards, the opportunity to re-enter the Navy and become an aviator was too good to pass up! During flight training, he was surrounded by the fish-rich waters of the famous Laguna Madre in South Texas. This was the genesis of his saltwater flats fishing experience. The world class fishing and ease of access led him to adopt the kayak as his preferred method of fishing.
Additional training took him to Jacksonville, FL where he began fishing competitively in the Extreme Edge Paddle Fishing Series where he earned the 2004 Angler of the Year title and became the first member assigned to the Hobie National Fishing Team. He has since lived in Maine, and most recently in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia where his kayak fishing resume and experience continues to grow.
Marty readily admits his Hobie affiliation and Naval career has allowed him to travel to many great fishing locales and has afforded him the opportunity to fish with the most prominent names in the sport. He truly relishes the opportunity to fish for new species and with new anglers wherever he goes!
Marty has fished from the Coast of Maine to South Texas and everywhere in between and still competes in as many tournaments as his schedule allows. He attends numerous clinics, demo days and seminars to promote his primary obsession. He particularly loves introducing new people to the sport and seeing their face light up when they get their first “sleigh ride” from a big fish!
Marty is a member of the Hobie National Team, Hobie Polarized Pro Staff, Kayak Bass Fishing Pro Staff and the HOOK 1 Crew. He can be found on KayakBassFishing.com where he is known as “PA Hillbilly”.
